Ever since the peoples, inhabiting the boundless woods
behind the Ural Mountains were first mentioned in ancient
chronicles, Siberia has been an attraction for numerous
travelers, researchers and scientists.
A huge territory from the Urals to the Amur river, 7
thousand km from the west to the east and 3,5 thousand km from
the north to the south - all this is Siberia. The word
"Siberia" means Sleeping land from tatar language.
Russian travelers didn't start exploring these boundless
territories until the 16th century. But even nowadays Siberia
is as mysterious and beautiful as many centuries ago and
attracts a great number of tourists from all over the
world.
While visiting Siberia, you will be able to enjoy the
unique beauty of its nature, learn about its culture,
traditions and customs of local population, see the amazing
stone building of its cities, and old houses of Siberian
villages - built in the 17-19 centuries.
"Baikal
Travel Co." offers a wide variety of
assorted excursions of the city of Irkutsk and to Lake
Baikal.
Irkutsk is called a "treasure house" of the spiritual
culture of Siberia. Founded in 1661 by the Cossack Yakov
Pohabov, Irkutsk has been located for more than 300 years on
banks of the Angara River, the beloved daughter of "father"
Baikal. It is probably the only city of Siberia that has
preserved its historic character- old time wooden houses,
built without a nail, decorated with skillful carving
harmonize with the splendid stone buildings of Siberian
architecture. There are about 700 monuments of history and
culture in Irkutsk. The most interesting for the guests of our
city are the historic ensembles in the central part of the
city: Spasskaya (Savior) church, The Epiphany cathedral, The
Polish Roman Catholic Church, the monument to explorers of
Siberia, the Okhlopkov Drama theater etc.
You will see all this during varioses tours of the city. You
will also have a possibility to visit museums, the expositions
of which describe the history of the city, the natural wealth of
the region and the cultural possessions of Irkutsk. You will
be able to watch theatrical staging of Irkutsk directors on
the stages of the Drama, Opera and Musical theaters.,
Literary meetings and music concerts are conducted in the
House-Museum of the Decembrist Volkonsky, who was exiled to
Siberia after the 1825 uprising.
Irkutsk is inseparable from Lake Baikal, the "Sacred sea"
of Siberia. Every educated person and traveler should visit
Lake Baikal. The lake is situated only 70 km away from Irkutsk
and you can easily reach it in a comfortable bus or motor
ship, provided by our company. Lake Baikal is the largest and
the deepest lake in the world, which has 23 % of the world's
reserves of fresh water. Having visited Lake Baikal, you'll be
convinced that it is the most beautiful
world. In 1996 by a UNESCO decree Lake Baikal was declared
world heritage and was included in the list of world heritage
sites. Presently Lake Baikal is an object of not only of
cognitive tourism but of different types of ecological tourism as
well. Numerous travelers come to not merely learn about it but
as well to see themselves the unique nature of lake by making
walking tours hiking along coasts of Lake Baikal or cruises on
comfortable ships, make immersions to the bottom of the sacred
lake-sea or climb the mountains which surround it like a stone
ring. A visit to the Museum of Lake Baikal history and to the
Outdoor Museum "Angara village" will expand your knowledge
about Lake Baikal.
The unique microclimate of Lake Baikal significantly
strengthens your body and health.
Your knowledge about Siberia and Lake Baikal will increase
for the great deal if you visit Buryatia - the land of
perpetual blue sky. This republic lies in the North of the
Asian continent and here clear, sunny days and a healthy dry
climate predominate. Lake Baikal waters wash the territory of
republic. It borders with the Irkutsk and Chita Regions, with
the Tuva Republic and with Mongolia.
In Buryatia there are many large and small lakes. Almost
all rivers of the republics (there are more than 9 thousand of
them) carry their waters to the deepest lake in the world -
Baikal.
Diverse is the Buryat land: broad steppes, dense taiga,
Eastern Sayan mountains (the highest point - Mt. Munku-Sardik
- 3491 m). Buryatia is often called the ancient crown of Asia.
The first early traces of the human existence on the territory
of Buryatia date back to the Old Stone Period - about 30-40
thousand years ago. In Buryatia more than 100 nationalities
live - this states the diversity of its way of living. Every
nationality on the territory of Buryatia has its type of
dwelling - the Evenks lived in chums made of deerskins, the
Buryats- in multi corner felt huts, the Russians - in wooden
blockhouses. It is this very varied and unique culture,
developing on the boundary of East and West, with unique
nature conditions combining the severity of the North and the
wildness of the South that the "
Baikal Travel Co." invites you to visit.
Our tour begins with a visit to the capital of Buryatia –
Ulan-Ude City. The city was founded in 1666 as a winter
outpost of Russian Cossacks. Verchneudinsk - in this way the
city was called before - is situated on the junction of two
rivers Selenga and Uda, on a crossroad of trading routes
leading from China and Mongolia to Russia and Europe. This
caused its quick development. It is the third largest city of
Eastern Siberia,
During the excursion you'll see old merchant mansions -
monuments of wooden and stone architecture, small houses
richly decorated with wood carving and also modern buildings
decorated with glass and mosaic pictures with Buryat
ornamental patterns.

village" you will learn the way of living of the local
Buryat population and Russian settlers. The museum gives you a
chance to discover the history of the inhabitants of this land
- here you'll see the outposts of taiga hunters and fishermen
- Evenks, the simple wooden houses of Russian old believers,
light Buryat felt yurts.
In the Art Museum you'll get a chance to see the Buryats'
art paintings and Buddhist icon painting, items of popular
arts and crafts made of wood, animal skins, horsehair, bone
and silver.

Buddhist religion center in Russia. Buddhism has spread to the
Baikal region in the 17 century and was represented by the
Tibet Buddhism - lamaism. During the excursion to
the Ivolguinskiy Datsan you'll witness and take part in
services of the temple, visit the sanctuary "OBO", which is
