In 1206, after years of inter ethnic struggle, the grandson of Khabul Khan - Temudzin was proclaimed Chinggis Khan during a convention of the Mongolian nobility on the Onon River. Besides Mongolia it included Northern China, Eastern Turkestan, Central Asia, the territory between the Irtysh and Volga rivers, most of Iran and the Caucasus. The Mongolian yoke held up the development of many countries of Asia and Europe for a long time. But though the Mongolian empire has left a black trace on the pages of history, it brought a number of changes and influenced the cultural development of the Mongols. In this period the Mongolian written language was created and cultural centers were organized around the Khan's headquarters. One of the most famous cities was Karakorum - the capital Mongolia in the13 - 14 centuries. Karakorum was founded by Chinggis Khan in 1220 as a military outpost, but became the cultural center of the empire. Karakorum existed for about 300 years, for 32 years of which it was Mongolia's capital. In 1368 it was destroyed by Chinese troops.
