" Baikal Travel Co."   invites you to a fascinating journey to the cities of so-called the Silver Ring of Russia - St. Petersburg, Karelia, the islands of Valaam and Kizhi. The history and spiritual heritage of these places attracted pilgrims, travelers and common people from all over the world for a long time. The natural beauty of Russia's North, the plants and animals of this land leave a deep impression in tourists' minds. The originality of the Silver Ring cities is in the rich architectural , historic and spiritual heritage of this land. Anyone who has once visited these places will never forget them.

We offer you not only to learn the history and the cultural heritage of the Russian North, but also to calm your soul, to accumulate some of the spiritual energy, coming from these holy sites.

We offer you to make a journey around 4 cities of the Silver Ring of Russia on board of a four deck motor-ship during 5 days, 4 nights.

Day 1. St. Petersburg - Valaam - Kizhi - Petrozavodsk - St. Petersburg

Arrival to St. Petersburg, a city tour by bus, during which you'll see the Palace Square, the Winter Palace, the Decembrists' square, the Admiralty, the Petropavlovsky Fortress etc. You will have an opportunity to visit the Isaakievsky cathedral, an outstanding monument of the19th century architecture and the main cathedral of the city that can accomodate 10 thousand people. Many kinds of precious stones: malachite, porphyry, marble are used in the internal decoration of the building. At night - departure by ship to the Valaam island. Dinner on board of the ship

  

Day 2. Breakfast on board of the ship. Arrival to Valaam.

Valaam is one of the most beautiful islands of the Northern Ladoga Lake. For the first time it was mentioned in 1329. The island has a long and diverse history. In the past the island was a place of worship of the pagan Vaal gods. The southern part of the main island is dominated by the Snake mountain, also known under the name of "Mt. Karniya". It was here where sacrifice to the gods was conducted. The main architectural monuments of the island are male monastery, cloisters of Russian monks. On the territory of the monastery once were active factories, farms, an icon-painting workshop. Now here resides an active male Orthodox Church monastery, which as previously is gladly visited by tourists and pilgrims from all over the world. During the tour to the Valaam male monastery, you'll visit the Cathedral of God's Resurrection, the church of Assumption of Virgin Mary, the church of St. Paul and Peter, monks' cells, exhibitions of monastic crafts, the brotherhoods' graveyard. We also offer you an excursion to Valaam cloisters, where you will get acquainted with the monastic lifestyle. After dinner in the monastic refectory - an excursion to the Holy Island with a visit to the Monastery Bay, the Fodorovsky Island, the church of St. Alexander Swirsky.

Day 3. Departure to Kizhi. Arrival, lunch, excursion around Kizhi.

  

Kizhi, the pearl of wooden architecture, is an island on Onega Lake, which has existed for about 3 centuries. The ancestors of the Kizhi population were migrants from Great Novgorod. Only two of the old Kizhi villages still remain - Yamka and Vasylievo. For 180 years the development of unique Kizhi architectural ensemble went on thanks to the efforts of unknown masters of several generations. Here coexist greatness and simplicity, power and elegance. The contours of the Kizhi architectural ensemble are visible from afar.

During the island tour you will visit old Russian buildings: churches and chapels, baths and houses, barns, smithies and many other buildings. The most ancient monuments of the museum is the church of Resurrecting of Lazar, the chapel of Three Saints, the chapel of Holy Saviour, the Transfiguration church crowned with twenty-two cupola ( 1714 ), the nine head Pokrovskaya church, the hipped roof bell tower (1874 ).

Nowadays the Kizhi Island has become a place of colorful folk holidays and Days of folk arts and crafts. Depending on an period of the year, you can visit a concert of folk music, enjoy the magic sound of the Russian national instruments and become a festival participant. Departure to Petrozavodsk.

Day 4. Petrozavodsk City Tour.

In 1703 Peter the Great , having opened a "window into Europe" for the country, established on the shore of the Onega Lake a cannon plant. Soon the new city of Petrozavodsk grew on this site. Presently it is the capital of Karelia, with a population of 300 thousand people. Temples of different confessions are active in the city, it's one of the largest economic, cultural and intellectual centers of Russia's Northwest.

Karelia is often called the land of woods and lakes. Pine-covered mountains tower above the calm dark water. It is a rough, but attractive land.

  

In Petrozavodsk you'll visit a famous cannon plant built by Peter the Great, will get to know the history of its construction, will visit the Local Lore museum where you will learn about the city and the region history and the cultural heritage. You will get acquainted with the exposition of the Art Museum and see famous Karelian souvenirs: embroidery, woodcarving, stone articles. You'll visit the monument of Peter the Great, the Sretenie Church, the Karelian Petropavlovskaya Fortress, which served as a place of exile for tsarist oprichniks, see some samples of wooden architecture, among which there are masterpieces of the18-19th century national architecture.

Dinner, departure to St. Petersburg.

Day 5. Arrival in St. Petersburg, excursion to Petrodvorets . It's the summer residence of the Russian tsars "The Versailles of Orient", situated on the shore of the Finnish Gulf. It is a real pearl of the Russian Art, a city of parks, palaces and fountains. In the Peterhoff museum you'll see the Great Peterhoff Palace with three splendid cascades, one of which is decorated with the famous Samson fountain; the Lower park, where 173 fountains are active in summer. 7 museums are open during winter. Also here you'll have lunch in the cozy restaurant and taste the royal Russian food.
